Seniors Struggle with Broken Elevator at Edmonton Housing Complex

Residents of Porta Place, a seniors housing complex in Edmonton, are voicing their frustrations as the building’s only elevator has been out of service for over a week. Managed by GEF Seniors Housing and owned by the Alberta Social Housing Corporation, the malfunction has left numerous elderly tenants, some well into their 80s and 90s, struggling with limited mobility and unable to leave their floors.

Barry Dove, a resident on the third floor, has endured considerable difficulties throughout the holiday season. “I had to attend several Christmas dinners, and I’ve been up and down the stairs countless times. It’s been exhausting,” Dove shared. His struggles highlight a broader concern for others in the building who are less mobile. After a recent fall in the stairwell, he expressed deep worry for his neighbors, noting, “There are sick people here. Many are elderly and unable to manage the stairs safely.”

Hank Kuhberg, another resident, described the physical toll the situation has taken. “Going downstairs isn’t too bad, but climbing back up is a real challenge. It gets harder each time,” he said.

The breakdown has left many seniors feeling isolated and concerned for their safety, with residents calling for urgent repairs to restore accessibility to the building.
