A 58-year-old man is hospitalized with serious injuries after an alleged exchange of gunfire with police near Highway 11/17 and Pebblestone Road, close to Kakabeka Falls.

THUNDER BAY — Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has initiated an inquiry into a police-involved shooting that occurred on Thursday afternoon, leaving a man injured.

Authorities received a 911 call around 2:18 p.m. from motorists reporting a man armed with a shotgun walking along Highway 11/17, approximately 30 kilometers west of Thunder Bay. Responding officers encountered the individual, who allegedly fired at a police cruiser. While the vehicle was struck, no officers were injured.

Police returned fire, injuring the man. He was transported to the hospital with serious injuries.

Highway 11/17 was temporarily closed in both directions between the Highway 588 turnoff and Jelly Road to secure the area, but it has since reopened. However, a significant police presence remains, and motorists may experience traffic delays.

Due to the SIU’s involvement, the Thunder Bay Police Service has refrained from releasing further details. The SIU, which oversees investigations involving police-related injuries, deaths, or allegations of sexual assault, is asking witnesses or anyone with relevant photos or video footage to assist the investigation. Information can be shared with the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529 or through their website at siu.on.ca.
