Heavy Rainfall and Dense Fog Expected in Southern Ontario, GTA on Sunday

The Greater Toronto Area (GTA) and much of southern Ontario are bracing for a rainy and foggy Sunday, with Environment Canada forecasting up to 30 mm of rainfall in some regions.

A rainfall warning issued on Saturday remains in effect for the area. Environment Canada cautioned that a low-pressure system is set to bring heavy rain throughout the day, with lingering light showers possibly extending into Monday.

“Localized flooding in low-lying areas is possible due to the frozen ground’s reduced ability to absorb rainfall,” the agency stated. Areas across the region could receive between 20 and 30 mm of rain.

Residents are being advised to stay vigilant for potential flooding, particularly near rivers, creeks, and culverts. “Avoid riverbanks and keep children and pets away from fast-moving or rising water,” the advisory added.

In addition to the rainfall warning, a fog advisory has been issued for Toronto and surrounding areas. Visibility is expected to be near zero in many places due to dense fog, particularly in the morning.

Drivers are urged to exercise caution on the roads, as visibility may decrease rapidly, creating hazardous conditions.

The weather alerts extend from Windsor in the west to Peterborough in the east, and as far north as Sudbury. Meanwhile, parts of Quebec and the Ottawa area are also under warnings for rainfall and freezing rain.

The unseasonably warm temperatures in the region are expected to persist, with Toronto seeing a high of 12°C on Sunday. Mild conditions will continue into the week, with daytime highs of 4°C on Monday and Tuesday and 2°C on Wednesday, the start of 2025. Rain and light snow are likely to accompany the warmer temperatures in the days ahead.
