Halifax, Canada:
The flight was operated by PAL Airlines for Air Canada Express, which experienced a terrifying ordeal after landing at Halifax Stanfield International Airport. It had landed there from Newfoundland, experiencing a failure in its landing gear, followed by a partial fire and an emergency evacuation late last evening.
It was reported to have happened at around 9:30 PM local time. The eyewitnesses stated that the plane banked to the left while scraping the wing along the runway and that sparks flew along with a tremendous crash-like sound. Paramedics and Nova Scotia RCMP responded promptly to the emergency.
The airport confirmed that everybody on board including crew members numbering almost 80, was taken out safely to a hangar near the accident scene for assessment, and reportedly, there were no injuries.
Police authorities are working to determine why the mechanical failure occurred. Teams from aviation boards of safety, and Air Canada experts are exploring if the mishap was as a result of technical failure or human error and even external causative factors.
This dramatic event in Halifax coincides with a tragic aviation disaster in South Korea. A Jeju Air flight from Bangkok to Muan crashed during landing, killing 179 of the 181 people aboard. The juxtaposition of these incidents underscores the challenges and risks of air travel, even in the age of advanced aviation technology.
