The Calgary community is mourning the loss of Ania Wardzala-Kaminski, a young mother of three and a well-loved school teacher whose life was tragically cut short in a double homicide. Her employer, Rocky View Schools, expressed their heartfelt condolences, describing her as an inspiring educator who will be profoundly missed by students, colleagues, and friends.
Ania, in her 30s, and her father, a man in his 70s, were both killed on Sunday evening. The suspect, her husband Benedict Kaminski, was found deceased on Monday in a rural area northwest of Calgary.
To honor Ania’s memory and support her now-orphaned children, a family spokesperson shared her name and photo publicly. A GoFundMe campaign initiated by a family friend has already raised nearly $130,000 to help provide for the children’s future.
“We are heartbroken to share the tragic loss of Ania Wardzala-Kaminski, a beloved mom, daughter, sister, and friend,” wrote organizer Diana Wysocki on the fundraiser page. “Ania’s dear children are now navigating unimaginable grief. This fund aims to ensure they have the resources and care they need moving forward without their mom.”
Neighbors described Ania and her family as kind and close-knit. Diane Lincoln, a neighbor of her parents, expressed shock at the tragedy. “They were such a lovely family. I never would have expected anything like this,” Lincoln said, calling the situation “heartbreaking and horrifying.”
Domestic violence experts stress the complexity and hidden nature of abusive relationships. Andrea Silverstone, CEO of the Sagesse Domestic Violence Prevention Society, highlighted the challenges victims face in leaving abusive situations, often compounded by coercive control.
“If you suspect someone is in danger, the best thing you can do is offer them unwavering support,” Silverstone said. “The journey out of abuse isn’t straightforward, and your role is to be there for them, no matter the ups and downs.”
Wardzala-Kaminski was a dedicated Grade 1/2 teacher at Elizabeth Barrett Elementary School in Cochrane and previously taught at other schools within the Rocky View district. A statement from Rocky View Schools acknowledged her positive impact over the years, noting, “She will be deeply missed by many.”
The double homicide unfolded late Sunday night. Calgary police found Ania’s father dead at his home in Kincora Grove NW. Hours later, they discovered Ania’s body at her residence on Tuscany Ridge Heights NW. An emergency alert was issued for Benedict Kaminski, 38, identified as a dangerous person, but he was found dead the following afternoon near Water Valley, alongside the family’s vehicle.
Authorities confirmed the children are safe and have begun autopsies for both victims. Calgary police are investigating the motive for the killings, describing them as targeted acts.
