Authorities Revise Strategy to Free Grounded Ship in Quebec

The Canadian Coast Guard announced a new plan today to refloat a ship that ran aground on the St. Lawrence River near Verchères, Quebec, on Christmas Eve.

Efforts to free the 185-meter bulk carrier, flagged in Cyprus, initially involved the use of tugboats. However, these attempts, carried out on Friday, were unsuccessful.

The revised strategy now focuses on offloading the ship’s cargo of corn onto a barge, aiming to reduce its weight and enable it to float again. According to a coast guard spokesperson, the ship’s owner is expected to finalize this cargo removal plan by the end of the day.

The vessel ran aground in the early hours of December 24 following a power failure. Despite the incident, officials report no injuries, no hull damage, no environmental pollution, and no disruption to marine traffic.

Efforts to resolve the situation are ongoing, with authorities closely monitoring developments.
