Alberta has confirmed plans to dispatch 40 wildland firefighters early next week to aid in the battle against devastating wildfires in Los Angeles County. The fires, which have claimed at least 11 lives and destroyed more than 10,000 structures, have left communities in urgent need of support.
Minister of Forestry and Parks Todd Loewen shared the news on Saturday, stating he had direct discussions with California’s Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, as well as the Governor’s Office of Emergency Services. He assured Californian officials that Alberta is prepared to provide both personnel and additional resources if needed.
“Our province stands ready to help our neighbors in California during this crisis,” Loewen said in a post on social media platform X. “We’re sending firefighters next week, and we have more support available if requested.”
In addition to firefighters, Alberta is preparing to deploy water bombers, night-vision helicopters, and an incident command team to assist in managing the emergency. Premier Danielle Smith reiterated Alberta’s commitment to helping those in need, emphasizing the province’s collaborative efforts with the federal government and the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre.
“Good neighbors always lend a hand in difficult times. We will stand by our American friends and provide whatever assistance they require,” Smith said in a statement.
Meanwhile, Calgary-based charity Parachutes for Pets is also stepping up to offer aid. The organization announced it is sending volunteers and donations to support affected areas in California. According to a social media post, a private plane carrying supplies and relief workers will depart early Sunday to relieve exhausted volunteers on the ground.
The situation remains critical in Los Angeles County as firefighters continue to battle the relentless blazes. Alberta’s assistance is expected to bring much-needed relief to those working tirelessly to contain the disaster.
