The driver of a stolen pickup truck, which was missing a tire and was seen traveling on just three wheels, remains at large, according to Victoria Police. The incident unfolded on Christmas Eve, as the truck was driven through Victoria and Saanich, with several videos of the bizarre chase quickly circulating on social media.
Victoria police spokesperson, Gemma Stroobant, confirmed Friday that the driver has not been arrested and that the investigation is ongoing. “No one has been apprehended at this time,” Stroobant said in an email, adding that authorities are continuing their efforts to identify and locate the suspect.
The strange chain of events began Tuesday when police received reports from the truck’s owners that it had been spotted in downtown Victoria. Officers quickly located the stolen vehicle, but when they attempted to stop it, the driver ran a red light and fled. At that point, police decided not to engage in a high-speed pursuit, as outlined by VicPD spokesperson Cheryl Major.
A short time later, police managed to catch up with the truck, which had come to a stop. In an attempt to disable the vehicle, officers removed a tire from the front left side. However, in the process, one of the police cars was damaged. Despite missing a wheel, the driver was able to resume driving and continued to flee the scene.
Videos captured by bystanders show the truck in action, with sparks flying from the missing tire as it made a left turn onto Boleskine Road from Douglas Street. The driver also appears to be traveling on the wrong side of Douglas Street before attempting to turn down a residential street in Saanich, dodging garbage bins along the way.
The stolen truck has since been recovered, and fortunately, no injuries were reported during the incident. Authorities are continuing their search for the driver, who faces several charges related to the stolen vehicle and the dangerous driving.
