B.C. Man Charged with Impaired Driving After Crash That Killed Good Samaritan

A 29-year-old man from Coombs, B.C., is facing six impaired driving charges after a fatal crash near Qualicum Beach that claimed the life of an 80-year-old Good Samaritan.

Patrick Hare, a resident of Red Deer, Alberta, died from injuries sustained when he stopped to assist a woman whose vehicle had crashed into a power pole on Highway 19A in the early hours of March 2, 2024. The incident occurred around 2:30 a.m., approximately 160 kilometers northwest of Victoria.

While waiting for emergency help, Patrick Hare, who had called 911 three times, was struck by another vehicle driven by the accused man. The impact also left the 36-year-old woman, whose minivan had hit the pole, with serious injuries.

B.C. Highway Patrol has since completed its investigation and laid six charges against the Coombs man, including dangerous driving causing death, impaired driving causing death, and operating a vehicle under the influence of both alcohol and cocaine.

Hare’s son, Ronald Hare, expressed his grief and pride in his father’s actions, recalling how Patrick had selflessly stopped to assist a stranger in need. “That’s why he stopped along the highway. He didn’t just pass by, he stopped to help,” Ronald said in an interview earlier this year. “He was a man of integrity and kindness.”

Patrick Hare and the injured woman were both taken to hospital with serious injuries, but tragically, Patrick succumbed to his wounds while receiving treatment at a hospital in Victoria.

The crash, which also left a damaged power pole along the highway, is a tragic reminder of the risks faced by those who stop to help others in distress. Police continue to investigate the circumstances of the crash, while the accused faces significant legal consequences for his role in the fatal incident.
